While Fiber Internet has occurred, it is mainly available for downtown area or high-density population area. HD Telecom is currently provide to customers the Internet through Cable and DSL. But what are the differences between these two infrastructure, and when should you choose one over another?

Structure

As one of the oldest technologies and the predecessor to dial-up, DSL (digital subscriber line) uses existing telephone network in your home to transfer data and connect you to the internet. That being said, unlike cable, DSL line is not being shared among your neighbors, which provides more stable and continuous connection.

On the other hand, cable internet operates through the existing coaxial cables (TV Cable) to deliver connection to you. Cable internet runs on a shared network, which might affect the performance of the connection during peak time.

Speed

In Ontario and Quebec, with DSL connection, download speed extends to 50Mbps, and upload speed can reach to 10Mbps.
For cable, download speed can usually go to 1Gbps, and upload speed can stretch to 30Mbps.

Suitable Users

Although DSL doesn’t provide that high speed, but it offer more stable connection than Cable. If you are light user who use Internet for browsing and streaming video and music, or you have small business requiring stability, DSL is a way to go.
If you have more than 5 people living in your house, or if you business requires constant transferring of heavy files (Design Agency…), you might want to opt for Cable Internet
