Since the beginning of 2020 when the Coronavirus hit, a survey released by ParentsTogether stated that 48% of respondents’ kids spend more than 6 hours per day online. The more screen time kids have, the more risks kids are being exposed to. Inappropriate content, cyberbullying, only predators…, those are always top concerns of parents when their kids go online.

Although many companies created platforms for kids such as Youtube Kids, Netflix Kids, or Messenger Kids, parents should still set guidelines and check in with their kids to make sure they are safe online. Here are 4 ways to help your kids stay safe.

1. Scheduling Internet Use Time

Setting time limits around your kid’s internet use is an excellent way to keep tabs on their activities online. Many browsers have the time limit feature built-in for children.

You can also schedule a regular screen-free family night.

2. Monitoring their Internet use

If you let your kids set up social media accounts and use the internet unsupervised, it would be a good idea to check in on what they’re doing.

You should let them know that you are monitoring their devices and why you do so, and let your kids know that is for their safety.

If your kids run into inappropriate content, tell them why is not safe to do so and what to do. Once they have a better understanding of how to safely use the Internet, you can monitor them less frequently.

3. Passwords

Often overlooked, password is one of the most effective methods to protect your kids from malicious content on the Internet. You can set up passwords for your devices, also on specific programs and certain functions on your devices to keep your kids safe.

4. Parental Controls

Most internet browsers and devices have some form of parental controls. It can create a list of websites that your kids cannot access to, filter inappropriate content, and set up timeframe for Internet use daily.
